Life Transition Counseling NYC
Life transitions often bring people much joy – marriage, a new baby or a promotion are examples of life transitions that bring happiness and fulfillment. However, transitions like a divorce, death of a family member or friend or the loss of a job can be extremely difficult to navigate. Many clients come to therapy when they find themselves in the crossroads of important decisions or in the midst of inevitable life changes or transitions. Most people pride themselves for having the ability to make important decisions on their own and flawlessly navigate through life’s ups and downs. However, there are times, situations or life crisis that can make you anxious, confused and conflicted. In such circumstances, some may be hesitant to talk about these difficulties with friends and family and having an “objective” listener or simply being able to talk to an impartial party can help greatly.
Examples of Life Transitions:
Everyone, at one point or another, will deal with a life transition. Unfortunately, there is no avoiding this. It is important to keep in mind that you are not alone and it is very common to experience difficulty during these life transitions. These changes can be a small or major life change and they can be anxiety producing. An experienced life transition therapist can help you manage your struggles and learn how to adjust to these transitions. Some common life transitions include:
- Thinking about marriage or having kids
- Contemplating ending a relationship
- Changing careers or dealing with a difficult work situation
- Thinking about a move or retirement
- Dealing with menopause or aging
- Midlife crisis
- Self-imposed or circumstances induced major life changes
There are numerous other examples of life transitions or passages as they are also called which can be stressful and difficult to navigate.
My Approach to helping clients going through Life Transitions:
Each new life transition comes with its own set of challenges. Whether you’re struggling with newfound singleness, becoming a first-time parent, losing a loved one or something else, while some people may seem more capable of dealing with life changes than others, not all transitions are equal. Additionally, the manner in which you coped with a past transition may not work in your current situation. Whatever the reason, I take my role working with life transitions very seriously.
My main goal in providing Life Transition Counseling is to provide my clients with a safe space to explore and feel what they are experiencing. It is not my place to give them advice on what to do, but to help them get in touch with their deepest and most authentic self. To do this I take thorough personal history of each client to understand the meaning and significance of what a particular transition activates or triggers for each person. From that place, we work together to sort out choices, possible consequences, best approaches, emotions and thoughts to pave the best path to move forward.
